Lost Words: Beyond the Page, a project supported back in Round 3 and developed by the team at Sketchbook Games, will be launched on Google Stadia next month.

Supported by publisher Modus Games, Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a 2D narrative adventure game where players move words to solve puzzles. The game features a story written by Rhianna Pratchett and ties the narrative into the gameplay in an unusual way, by having the player running on and interacting with words to solve puzzles.

Back in 2018, Sketchbook Games was awarded the Deal of the Year UK Games Fund Award for their achievement in securing the publishing deal with Modus Games.

Speaking of the announcement, Paul Durrant (Director at UK Games Fund) said:

“It’s great to see the creativity and originality of Lost Words being picked up by Google Stadia. This helps to demonstrate the huge creative value of UK indie games IP and why the UK Games Fund provides crucial early stage support. Sketchbook Games won our “Deal of the Year” category at the UK Games Fund Awards in 2018 when they originally signed Lost Words with Modus and this announcement reinforces that accolade”

Mark Backler, Founder at Sketchbook Games, said:

“Support from the UK Games Fund came at a critical time when our finances were running very low and it allowed us the runway to create a polished vertical slice build of the Lost Words: Beyond the Page, which we took to Gamescom to pitch to publishers. As a result of this, it won UKIE’s UK Game of the Show award, was featured in MCV/ Develop and through that article was then picked up by the publisher Modus Games who then funded the final two years of development. Therefore I can honestly say that without support from the UK Games Fund I don’t know where we would be and it is quite possible that the title wouldn’t have seen the light of day.

Lost Words was funded through multiple different means and the UK Games Fund has been one of the best sources of support and funding that we have had the luck and privilege to be able to work with. The other support provided by the UK Games Fund such as the UKGF Awards, meetups at shows like EGX, and a network of other developers have also been a really big help and boost to our team.”
